The SATC has always served as a forum to debate current transport related issues and we plan to remain doing just that.

Chris Burger
Senior researcher
Former military air traffic controller Chris Burger’s research interests include new technologies around broadcasting, wideband internet access and unmanned aircraft. Burger flies ambulance jets and acts as a pilot examiner for the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
He holds Airline Transport Pilot Licences in South Africa and the United States, and is qualified on jets, helicopters, gliders and seaplanes. Ogaga Udjo
Managing director: ZA Logics
Ogaga Udjo is the managing director of ZA Logics – an African advisory firm – and is a commercial aviation professional. He believes that transportation and connectivity (both virtual and physical) are keys to economic inclusion, opportunity and ultimately success for the African continent.
Udjo has years of corporate experience with Comair Limited, South African Airways and Qatar Airways (based in Doha). He has appeared on several platforms, including Yahoo Finance, eNCA, China Global Television Network and Power FM, and was featured on the front cover of the February 2020 edition of Destiny Careers magazine.

Bazil Govender
Executive Manager
Southern African Bus Operators Association (SABOA)
Bazil Govender oversees the strategic and operational portfolio for SABOA and all its stakeholders. He also heads up the SABOA Secretariat office.
Bazil joined SABOA in January this year, and has 33 years’ industry experience in the transport and logistics sector, including in road freight logistics and public transport.
He is responsible for managing all the association’s affairs, and represents SABOA in liaison and interaction with all stakeholders in the bus sector, including national, provincial and local government; parliamentary portfolio committees; provincial legislatures; other industry associations; organised labour; passenger forums; bargaining councils; and regulatory authorities.
Bazil is also responsible for providing and coordinating industry comments and inputs on draft legislation, government policies and reports affecting the bus industry, and managing media liaison, corporate communications, social media and other reputation management of the association.

Nico McLachlan
Paratransit sector specialist
Nico McLachlan has worked in various parts of the African transport sector over the past 20 years, including acting as industry transition facilitator to affected minibus taxi operators in the Cape Town MyCiTi Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) project (phase1), the N2 Express IRT project, and the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit project (phase 1).
Nico was project manager of the Cape Town minibus taxi industry transformation programme and was responsible for the design of the three-year paratransit capacity-building programme, supported by Transport for Cape Town, the city’s transit authority.
Nico recently worked as public transport institutional and contracts advisor to the government of Rwanda on the review and development of second-generation public transport contracts in the city of Kigali, and is currently working on a paratransit business model improvement project in Kampala, Uganda.
He is a contributing author to the book Paratransit in African Cities and regularly publishes on the Organisation Development Africa blog, focusing on minibus taxi and public transport issues. He serves on the advisory board of the University of Cape Town Centre for Transport Studies.

William Dachs
Gautrain Management Authority
William Dachs took over as CEO of the Gautrain Management Authority (GMA) on 1 February 2020, after serving as the commuter service COO from 2014. Before that he was the GMA’s technical services senior executive manager.
Dachs is a professional engineer registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa and has degrees in civil engineering and law.
Prior to joining the National Treasury in 2000, he worked for 10 years as a consulting civil engineer in transport- and water-related projects in South Africa.

Group Chief Executive of Transnet
Portia has led Transnet since February 2020. In her career Portia has occupied senior positions in the South African government during a period of major economic reform, including that of Public Enterprises Director-General. During her tenure as DG, Portia provided strategic direction to state-owned enterprises. She holds an MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand and an MSc in Economics and Geology from the University of Natal.

Senior Director, Transport at TradeMark East Africa
Abhiskek supports regional integration and trade competitiveness in East Africa by helping infrastructure agencies prepare and finance key transport and logistics facilities. He has more than 18 years of experience and has worked across the entire value chain of infrastructure development, from strategy to implementation and financing. Abhiskek has worked in a number of developing countries in Asia and Africa, for a variety of institutions, including national and state governments, infrastructure developers, private equity companies and several development finance institutions.

Umberto de Pretto
International Road Transport Union (IRU) Secretary General
Umberto took up office as IRU Secretary General in June 2013 after joining the IRU in 1995 as Head of Economic Affairs. His ambition for the IRU is to embrace innovation and ensure that the industry is ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead. After graduating from Ottawa’s Carleton University with a degree in Political Science, Economics and International Relations, Umberto worked as a legislative assistant in the Canadian Parliament before moving to Paris in 1992 to head the International Chamber of Commerce’s transport division.

Susanna Zammataro
Director General – International Road Federation
International Road Federation (IRF) Director General Susanna Zammataro has been actively involved in multinational discussions, including at the United Nations (UN), on the impact Covid-19 is having on the transport industry. Along with her responsibilities at the IRF, Ms Zammataro is a member of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) high-level panel on road safety and has, since 2012, been co-chair of the UN Road Safety Collaboration group, aimed at strengthening global and regional cooperation on road safety. Ms Zammataro is also involved in the World Bank’s Sustainable Mobility for All initiative, as an expert on efficiency, safety and gender.

Martin Humphreys
Lead Transport Economist – World Bank
Martin Humphreys is a Lead Transport Economist in the World Bank’s Transport unit, and the Global Leader for the bank’s Transport Connectivity and Regional Integration, Maritime Transport and Logistics division. Mr Humphries has nearly 30 years’ wide-ranging experience in the transport sector in a number of countries and regions, including Denmark, Russia, the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, South Asia, the South Caucasus, the Baltic States, the Western Balkan countries, and East and Southern Africa. He is a specialist in post-conflict, fragile and low- and middle-income countries and has a doctorate in Transport Economics.

Phil Hendricks
Transport Client Director – Aurecon (Africa)
Phil Hendricks is currently the Transport Client Director for Aurecon (Africa). He is also the Board Chair of the Annual Transport Convention. Mr Hendricks has over the years served in a number of roles at Aurecon at both global and regional level and is currently a member of Aurecon’s Africa Board. He has served a number of industry associations and is the current President of the South African Road Federation. Mr Hendricks previously worked at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) as the Executive Director of the Transport Division and subsequently Executive Director of Strategic Relationship Management and Executive Director of the National Research Centres.
